Senior Living Mental Health Checklist

5/18/2022

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Our Lake in the Hills senior retirement community focuses on creating a Life in Harmony™ to support our residents' mental health through the Eight Dimensions of Wellness. In addition, our medical experts have created a Senior Living Mental Health Checklist below to ensure you and  your senior loved one has a healthy mind.

Depression
Medical experts say depression and anxiety are not a normal part of aging. However, if you or your senior loved one are experiencing consistent feelings of sadness or nervousness, you should see a medical professional. Our senior living community offers residents a variety of ways to keep their minds healthy. First of all, the support of a community provides social wellness and can be the first line of defense against depression and anxiety. We love to see our residents talking, bonding, and helping one another. Exercise is also a proven way to fight off feelings of depression and anxiety. Our Lake in the Hills senior living community has a state-of-the-art fitness center, group exercise classes, and walking groups to encourage physical wellness.
Senior Living Mental Health Checklist
Gut Health
Gut Health
Are you eating mindfully? There is compelling research in regard to the mind-gut connection. A healthy, balanced diet can produce more stable moods, a happier outlook, and a more remarkable ability to focus. On the other hand, a diet high in sugar and processed food can affect your mental health negatively. Eating food full of sugar can give you a rush of energy and then a crash. Our senior living community, in McHenry county offers culinary masterpieces of locally sourced meats and farm-fresh fruits and vegetables.

Sleep
Do you sleep well? Chronic sleep issues harm your overall quality of life. Unfortunately, most sleep issues in seniors go undiagnosed. Consider talking to your primary care physician if you are having problems sleeping. Creating a sleep and exercise routine and watching what you drink are necessary for a better night's sleep..

It's essential for seniors to continue to thrive in their golden years, whether they age in place or enjoy living in an assisted living and memory care community. Melody Living offers assisted living and memory care residents a safe and healthy atmosphere promoting healthy minds. For more information, contact 847.957.7070.
