You might find yourself browsing our community calendar and wonder what the Saturday Sillies are. At Melody Living, we believe that joy can be found in humor and make it a point to bring joy to the lives of everyone that works or lives in our senior living community. One scheduled way that we do this is through our Saturday Sillies Program. This program is led by our weekend Activity Assistant and is a social and therapeutic humor group where residents can come together to start their day off laughing at riddles, puns, punch lines and more! At the request of residents, this program has evolved into a weekly gathering! One of the many reasons we love featuring this weekly program is because of the positive impact that laughing has on one’s overall well-being. Studies show that laughing regularly has many health benefits. Creates relaxationWhen a good laugh happens, it can release physical tension and stress in your body which leaves your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes. Supports your immune systemLaughter also plays an important role for your immune system as it decreases stress hormones and increases immune building cells and infection-fighting antibodies – this is great for staying healthy but also for increasing resistance to disease. Releases endorphinsEndorphins are a chemical in our bodies and create that happy feeling we get when we hug someone or laugh! This chemical is easily released when laughing and promotes an overall sense of well-being. This can be especially beneficial for someone who is experiencing pain as it can help take away your focus from that and alleviate any unpleasant emotions or feelings. It’s good for the heartLaughter stimulates and improves blood flow and how blood vessel’s function. Laughing has amazing health benefits for protecting you against a heart attack or other cardiovascular concern. Keeps you fit – well sort ofWhile it is certainly not a replacement for physical activity, studies show that laughing for about 15 minutes a day can burn about 40 calories – that’s enough to drop 3 lbs. over the course of a year! After a year of the Quarantine 15, let’s get laughing! Relieves anger or depressionA good laugh, especially when shared with someone else, can help alleviate the feeling of anger or depression. Live longer with laughterA study in Norway found that people with a good sense of humor outlived those who do not laugh as often. The study specifically highlighted the difference for those who are battling cancer.
Overall, our Saturday Sillies are an integrated and intentional way to bring residents and staff together and to promote laughter in our lives!
