You may have already met Norm Ringler, our independent living featured resident of the month. A long-time Melody Living resident, Norm recently transitioned from our assisted living community into our brand new independent senior living apartments. We are so excited to welcome Norm to our community and for you to get to know him.
Norm was born in Germany on a U.S. Army base near Berlin. After living in Germany for a short time, his family moved to West Virginia when his father’s enlistment ended with the Army. After a year in West Virginia, they relocated to Hammond, Indiana to be closer to his aunt Helen on his father’s side.
He has two sons and is the grandfather of Leon, an adorable Corgi. Norm’s last occupation was as a business owner and electrical engineer, but before then he served in the Air Force for 5 years as an Airborne Command and Control Communications Technician.
Norm does speak some German, but he would like to continue learning in order to be more fluent in the language. Some of his favorite hobbies include fishing, hunting, and riding his motorcycle. A new hobby Norm would like to pick up is painting, preferably abstract painting.
Norm’s favorite holiday would have to be Christmas, when asked why he said, “It’s a big birthday party for a very important person in my life.” Norm says his special talent is fixing broken things from electronics, mechanics, and broken hearts.
A pivotal moment in history that he remembers most is the Vietnam War which was ending as he was graduating high school, soon after he decided to enlist in the Airforce.
Norms favorite place to visit is rural Canada for fishing and hunting. If he could choose to go anywhere though, it would be Alaska for the beautiful and breathtaking scenery. Norm says that his greatest accomplishment in life so far is being a father.
Norm’s son had originally chosen Melody Living. Norm thought he fit in well, so he decided to call it home. Norm’s condition improved in our assisted living community while awaiting the much-anticipated opening of Melody Living’s independent living neighborhood. Some of his favorite amenities include the landscape, walking areas around the buildings, and the gas station being within walking distance so he never runs out of ice cream.
When asked what advice Norm would like to share with others, he stated “War is a Waste.”
