Meet Russell Carlson, Melody Living’s assisted living featured resident of August! We love getting to know each of our residents here at Melody Living Lake in the Hills and are so excited for you to meet Russell. Russell was Born in Chicago, Illinois, on the north side of Chicago. He attended elementary, middle, and high school in Chicago and is an alumnus of Nicholas Senn High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Russell served three active years, and three years in the Navy Reserve. While in the Navy Russell attended Norman Oklahoma Aviation School, once completed, Russell went to another naval course in Memphis, Tennessee for 8 weeks. Following Tennesee, Russell was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida where he repaired naval airplanes during his active-duty years. During this time Russell married his wife Annamae Berglund in 1956. Annamae was our first move-in resident to the newly opened Melody Living independent senior living apartments in Lake in the Hills, Illinois; an extension of the continuum of care we promote at Melody Living. Russell and Annamae went on to have four children; three sons, and one daughter. They now have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren which they both love dearly. After the Navy, Russell became a machinist business owner. His company was called Carlson Metal Specialties. Russell specialized in making metal parts, he would receive blueprints from his customers and would create each metal part using machinery tools. His favorite hobbies are anything to do with woodworking and metalworking, he even said his special talents are woodworking and metalworking. Russell’s Favorite holiday is Christmas. He loves seeing the children open the presents Santa Claus brings them. A pivotal moment in history for Russell was when President Kennedy was assassinated. He remembers the sadness the country felt on this day. Russell and his wife’s favorite place to visit was her family’s cottage in Stormy Lake in Wisconsin. He and his family would go stay for two weeks every summer. They also loved Sweden because both of their parents were born there. Hawaii is their third favorite place because of the tropical weather. Russell’s greatest accomplishment was helping raise his four children. Russell chose Melody Living with the help of his wife. His wife was unable to care for him at home anymore and she knew he needed additional healthcare than what she was able to provide at home. His wife felt Melody Living was the best fit for his extended needs. Russell says he likes it here at Melody Living “I’m the quiet one, but I love the fellowship at my dining table with the guys.” Russell enjoys all the special concerts we have scheduled by our Life Enrichment Department. Advice from Russell is to “save money while you’re young.” We can't wait to help you discover a Life in Harmony™ like Russell has with Melody Living assisted living Lake in the Hills.
