Meet Our Assisted Living Resident - Ron Doerr

​We love getting to know every single one of our residents at our senior living Lake in the Hills community, and we want you to get to know them as well. This month, we are featuring our community’s assisted living resident, Ron Doerr.
 
Ron has three kids and four grandkids who he loves dearly. Throughout his life, he has had many careers including driving a food truck, working in the printing industry, working in security for Wells Fargo, and driving a semi-truck. Ron was also a foster parent, he shared that he was often given the mischievous children because he had success with getting them to mend their ways.
 
An interesting fact about Ron is that he was in the service for only one day. Ron didn’t pass the physical and was sent back home. 

​Ron also has many fun hobbies, such as collecting stamps, and coloring. Ron also leads Puzzles with Ron every other week for our Lake in the Hills retirement community. His favorite hobby though, is trains. Melody Living Lake in the Hills is planning an outing to the Illinois Railroad Museum during his birthday month. Ron volunteered at the museum over the years and worked to paint the old boxcars in order bring them back to their former glory. The Illinois Railroad Museum is his favorite place to visit.

​A pivotal moment in history that Ron remembers was when JFK was shot. He was at work and heard about it on the radio and thought it was a joke. He couldn’t believe it was true.
 
Christmas is Ron’s favorite holiday, he looks forward to the new hobby projects he gets from his daughter each year. Ron says his special talent is driving. Fun fact, he drove a double trailer from Chicago to Los Angeles and back in addition to his many driving jobs.
 
Ron’s dream destinations to visit are Norway and Hawaii. His parents were able to visit Norway and he always wished he could have too as he is half Norwegian. He also wished he could visit Hawaii because his parents went there and his dad held the record for the biggest Marlin caught that year. He’s always wanted to catch a fish like that.

​His greatest accomplishment was the work he did at the Illinois Railroad Museum. He took so much pride in returning the boxcars to their former glory.
 
Ron’s daughter chose Melody Living Lake in the Hills for him because it was close to her house and she wanted to visit as often as possible. You can often find Ron playing Bingo or working on puzzles in one of our community life rooms.
 
The one piece of advice he wants to share with others is: “Just don’t get yourself in trouble.” Ron is a wonderful addition to our community and we’re beyond grateful to have him here with us. He is always willing to help and is one of our ambassadors. Ron is always happy to welcome new residents to help them feel like they belong from the moment they arrive.
