April’s Resident Feature at Melody Living Independent Living

At Melody Living Independent Living, we love to shine a spotlight on the remarkable stories and experiences of our residents.

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Ken May, a cherished member of our Lake in the Hills community. Join us as we delve into Ken's journey and learn more about the rich tapestry of his life.

Ken May was born and raised on his family's Dairy Farm in Richmond, Illinois, amidst the company of seven siblings.

​Following his upbringing on the farm,  Ken and his younger brother were both drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War shortly after graduating high school, a pivotal moment that shaped his early adulthood. 

After his service, Ken pursued a career as a lineman, eventually ascending to the position of superintendent in Libertyville, Illinois. A significant accomplishment in his career was when he was put on a project at his job to figure out the discrepancies in labor and discovered that employees were spending their time in training courses and safety meetings for over six months of the year. 

Growing up on a farm with seven siblings, Ken picked up the hobby of toy making to entertain himself and his brothers and sisters. When it came time to build his house, he fell in love with carpentry and woodworking on a bigger scale as well. His favorite place to visit is the dairy farm he was raised on. His family sold the farm after his father’s passing, but he still likes to drive by it from time to time.

Ken discovered his talent for stained glass work while repairing windows in his father's barn. For over 20 years, he honed his skills through classes at McHenry County College and delighted in crafting intricate stained glass pieces for family and friends.

Ken's craftsmanship has always been admired by those around him, and he considers it one of his special talents. Nowadays, Ken finds joy in participating in activities at Melody Living and cherishes the camaraderie he shares with fellow residents. 

Thanksgiving holds a special place in his heart, as it symbolizes cherished family gatherings that continue to this day. Ken has an interest in learning Spanish because he is always amazed when hearing people speak the language.

A significant moment in history for Ken is the day he and his family learned of President John F. Kennedy's assassination while watching television on the farm. This historic event left a lasting impression on him.​

After a months-long search, careful consideration, and visits to various facilities with his daughter, Ken chose Melody Living as his new home.

He loves how new and luxurious the building is; the quality dining service and welcoming atmosphere were key factors in his decision as well. Living closer to his daughter in Lake in the Hills also brought immense relief, ensuring easy access to appointments and visits.
