April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month

4/14/2022

Melody Living Lake in the Hills’ assisted living and memory care community observes Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month each April. We support our residents living with Parkinson’s disease by ensuring we offer the Eight Dimensions of Wellness.

About Parkinson’s Disease
Nearly one million people in the United States are living with Parkinson's disease. April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month because the first doctor to describe the disease was born this month. James Parkinson, a physician based in London, wrote “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy,” in
1817. Parkinson’s disease affects the nervous system of middle aged and elderly people. It causes muscle stiffness and tremors. There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease but treatment can help.

Paxxon Healthcare Services
Our senior living community has a unique partnership with Paxxon Healthcare Services to offer treatment to residents living with Parkinson’s disease. Paxxon Healthcare Services has on-site comprehensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy services. Residents benefit from working with our LSVT certified therapist. LSVT therapy is available in two distinct programs. LSVT LOUD speech therapy improves communication in daily living; and LSVT BIG physical or occupational therapy improves mobility and movement used in everyday function. The weekly class focuses on Parkinson's patients and includes both education and exercises.
Life in Harmony
Our senior living community was created to provide all of our residents an opportunity to live a Life in Harmony. We take extra care in providing our residents living with Parkinson’s disease with the support they need. Our on-site fitness center, exercise classes, walking paths, and Paxxon services promote physical wellness. Paxxon Healthcare Services also focuses on education for our residents to provide them with intellectual wellness. Because our residents are truly part of a caring community - they experience social wellness during fitness classes, group walks, among many other activities designed specifically for seniors living with Parkinson’s disease.
