Parkinson's Awareness Month

4/12/2023

Parkinson's Awareness Month
April is Parkinson's Awareness Month and every six minutes someone in the United States is diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive and chronic disease that affects over a million people in the U.S. and over 10 million people across the globe.

Parkinson’s is categorized as a movement disorder that affects one’s ability to perform many daily tasks. Parkinson’s is most commonly recognized through the regression of motor skills due to tremors and stiffness in the muscles.

While medication plays a large role in managing Parkinson’s for many who are diagnosed; there are some different lifestyle changes, therapies, and exercises one can utilize to improve life with Parkinson’s alongside those medications.

Massage therapy can help to temporarily reduce tremors and relax stiff muscles. Massage  increases blood flow, promotes overall relaxation, and has also been shown to reduce pain and fatigue.
Staying active is one of the most recommended ways to retain mobility and stability for those with Parkinson’s. Slow moving, low impact exercises such as Tai Chi or Yoga are some of the best activities to help improve symptoms. These exercises increase balance, coordination, flexibility, and mobility. Staying active in any way also helps to improve overall mood, decrease stress, and even can help to create better sleep.
